Status of Abortion
in South Dakota

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2023, abortion has been banned in South Dakota except to save the life of the mother.

However, abortion is still legal in neighboring states, where women from South Dakota seeking abortion go to terminate their pregnancies. The numbers provided on the map illustrate where South Dakota women received abortions in 2021. Also note that stats on South Dakota women who had abortions in Wyoming and Iowa are not available from that timeframe.
